Baltimore Heritage Quilters' Guild

Meeting and Workshop Schedule 2008-2009
Meetings begin at 7PM
Sit and Sew beginning at 6PM
- September 9
- I know we are all excited to see our many friends and share our quilting stories with them and also that we eagerly look forward to viewing the summer challenge quilts, which will be unveiled at our 2008-09 season opening meeting on September 9th. We will have the opportunity to be inspired by the travels of our guild members, to see how travels can influence our quilts, and to vote on our favorite quilts. I hope you are all busy finishing your projects and thank our special projects chair, Chris Bowers, for her hard work on this program. Also featured at our September meeting will be a Guild Library auction! Dawn Burchett has been busy planning a very exciting auction for us which I know will be lots of fun. So, don't forget your "pin money"!
- October 14
- Dianne Hire
- Dianne S. Hire, an internationally known fiber artist and the author of Quilters Playtime, Games for Quiltmakers as well as editor of Oxymoron, a collection of absurdly logical quilts will visit us on October 14th. This promises to be a most exciting meeting. Dianne is a delightful and very talented individual and I do so look forward to meeting her. We will have the opportunity to view slides of her collection of forty quilts based upon oxymorons, the juxtaposition of completely contradictory words, created by forty uniquely different quiltmakers and to hear how these mismatched phrases, nonsensical upon investigation of meaning, influenced designs--and the reasons behind those designs.
- October 15
- Come Play With Me
- On Wednesday October 15th, we will enjoy a workshop at the Seminole Sample in Catonsville. Need to lighten up? Not having any quilting fun? Tired of prissy little piecing? Then, this workshop's for you. Improvisational and intuitive, we'll play liberating games at your sewing machine, allow creative juices to flow. We'll slice fabrics, trade slivers of blocks, hunt for bright colors just begging for a place to land in a quilt. Return home with a few oxymoron blocks, in random order. Most of all we will have lots of fun. The cost for this daylong workshop is $60.00. The registration form and supply list (Page 1 Page 2) are available.
- November 11
- Kim Fess and Rebecca Heinze
- The two Quirky Quilters from Annandale Virginia will be presenting a wonderful and hilarious take on quilting at our November meeting. Two Quirky Quilters will delight you with song parodies they have written about their adventures and "misadventures" in quilting, while sharing a trunk show of their own quilts. Everyone absolutely raves about Kim and Rebecca, and you will be entertained by their presentation.
- December 10
- Holiday Party
- January 13
- Marty Vint and Claudia Chapman
- The Language of Longarming
-
This program is designed to assist you, as consumers, to better understand the
services provided by longarm quilters. Professional members Claudia Chapman
and Marty Vint and guild longarm owners Nancy Evans and Nancy Wilking will
address topics which will include:
• Why do quilters go to longarmers?
• What services are available from a longarmer and what do those terms they throw around really mean? (Pantograph? SID? Custom?...)
• How should I best prepare my quilt top and backing to take to a longarm quilter?
• What types of quilting will best suit my quilt?
• What kinds of battings and threads are available from longarm quilters?
This presentation will be accompanied by a display of quilts as well as a gorgeous slide show of quilts finished by longarm quilters. It will provide an exceptional opportunity to learn more about this fascinating and popular method of turning your tops into quilts! - February 10
- Pat Long Gardner
- Handerkerchief Quilts
- Our own long time guild member, author and award winning quilter Pat Long Gardner will enthrall us with a newly digitized slide presentation of her beloved quilts made from the handkerchiefs she has collected over her lifetime of travels. Each quilt is unique, inspired by and lovingly designed around the theme of the featured handkerchief. Pat’s enthusiasm, knowledge and unique fascination with fabrics and colors are sure to inspire her audience.

- Workshop with Carol Taylor

Have you always admired those pieced circles? You can do it with ease and without even pinning. Create a small (32 x 32) unique quilt of your very own while learning to piece circles & some unusual strip sets, and do Carol’s trademark circular quilting to complete the look. We will start with piecing simple circles that you cut improvisationally and move on to more complex circles. Then Carol will show how to make and use some unusual strip sets to complete the quilt. All done with a minimal amount of measuring to free you up and allow you to think out of the box. You’ll also learn how to finish your quilts with facings instead of bindings. You’ll be thrilled with the resulting small quilt, which you can do in many different color schemes (see the samples done in two different colorways), and hang in your own home or give as a gift. Check Carol’s website (www.caroltaylorquilts.com) to see how many quilts Carol has made using these same techniques, and then come make your very own.

- Susan Ball Faeder, Quilter’s Express, Japan
- Susan Ball Faeder, an American quiltmaker who has studied Japanese art
and culture for over 35 years will lecture at our May 12, 2009 meeting.
Susan lived in Japan as a high school exchange student and also for a year
on an ambassadorial scholarship. During this time, Suzanne developed a
love of Japanese textiles and sewing techniques.
Susan started her business, Quilters’ Express to Japan, in 1988, with the aim of teaching people about Japan through the vehicle of quilting. Over the last 20 years, she has accomplished this not only through the tours, but also through her lecturing, teaching, vending, designing, and last but not least--her own quilting.
Her first tour to Japan - dedicated to promoting international peace and world friendships through quiltmaking - took place in September 1989. On that first venture, she escorted 33 people to Japan, set up a special quilt exhibit of work by more than half the participants, and arranged for the tour group to meet and exchange 9" blocks with 5 different groups of Japanese quilters. Since then, she has successfully led a total of 17 tours ALL to Japan... ALL for quilters!!
Over the years, Susan has also become a well-known vendor at many select quilt festivals across the country, selling Japanese textiles. Suzanne will talk about Japanese textiles with us and will also bring some of her amazing fabrics to sell.
Additionally, Susan would be offering a half day workshop on the morning of the 13th of May. The cost will be $30.00 plus the pattern fee for each attendee. The class description is as follows:

- Annie Smith
- Annie Smith is a quilt designer and internet personality from San Jose, California. She has taught quilting and related needle arts for over twenty years, and full time for nearly ten years. Her technical expertise takes many forms, although fabric selection and fine machine appliqué are her specialties. In April, 2005 she added "Internet Radio Personality" to her resume when she began the first-ever quilting-related podcast, "Quilting Stash." You may ask, just what is thing called a podcast? A podcast is a broadcast (like old time radio), that is made available for download via an internet website. You can then listen to the broadcast whenever you want, either using your computer and its speakers or using any device like a flash drive, CD or an iPod. Annie's podcast reaches thousands of listeners internationally. This award-winning quilting artist has won top honors at the State level and owns her own publishing and media company, Simple Arts. Annie's lecture style is light-hearted, full of laughter and warmth. Every audience member will relate to the things of which Annie speaks. She crosses boundaries of age and experience and shows people the love she has for this craft as few others can. On the evening of June 9th, Annie will present her lecture on “Understanding the Value of Color”, and on June 10th, she will offer a one-day no-sew workshop on “Exploring Fabric Choices”.
- June 10
- Workshop with Annie Smith
- Traditionally quilters struggle with their fabric choices when making a quilt--sometimes even through to adding the binding! Build your self-confidence in choosing fabrics for your quilts in this fun and informative workshop. Annie will help you to look at fabrics in a different way. The key to fabric selection will be thoroughly discussed with a hands-on demonstration using fabric swatches and other helpful tools. Students will make a series of past-up blocks using fabrics from their own stashes to make a useful resource binder! This is a no-sew inspirational and interactive workshop. The fee for this day-long workshop is $40.00. The supply list and registration forms are attached.
